Newest population projection made by the United Nations predicted that the global population will reach eight billion people in November 2022
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The United Nations (UN) has forecast the global population to reach eight billion by November 2022, the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) stated.

"Newest population projection made by the United Nations predicted that the global population will reach eight billion people in November 2022," deputy of population control at the BKKBN, Bonivasius Prasetya Ichtiarto, noted here on Monday.

The projection showed that global population had increased by one billion in just 11 years, and in 2011, the global population was recorded to have reached seven billion people.

He stated that the rapid increase in the number of people could be a great resource for global development if their quality were also improved.

The growth in population was possible owing to the developments in technology that had made life easier, advancements in medical sector that had increased the longevity rate, as well as a decline in the maternal, infant, and children mortality rates.

"Yet the fight for reproductive rights must still continue, such as giving women the freedom to choose and decide if they wanted children. If so, then more or less kids, using contraceptives or not, in accordance with the reproductive needs, including having access to information or reproductive medical services," he pointed out.

With eight billion people, it means that there were also eight billion opportunities to compete with other people in order to get a better life of one's choice, Ichtiarto stated.

"The main characteristic of demographic changes today is how the demographic (dynamics) vary in each country. As long as civilizations exist, this is the first time we see an extreme variation in the average age and fertility rate in each country," he remarked.

The agency was focused on pursuing the creation of happy, independent families of good quality as a means to create a new generation with high competency.

The government is also striving to pursue stable population growth with good quality human resources, as stipulated in the National Population and Family Planning Agency's strategic plan for the 2020-2024 period.

In order to meet the target of stable population growth, the total fertility rate should be reduced, from 2.26 per woman in 2020 to 2.1 per woman in 2024, he stated.

Ichtiarto also compelled every country to understand and anticipate the demographic changes by preparing a unique response in the form of data that could assist in negating the bad impacts and seizing the present opportunities.

Data will assist in demographic resilience, as it will inform the people that the changes in demographic trends were influenced by social, economic, environmental, and political factors.

"All people in the world have the right to participate in development, regardless of sex, ethnicity, party, religion, and origins. Every act of discrimination, harassment, and violence must be prevented and minimized," he added.
