Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - Surabaya Deputy Mayor Armuji visited a local centenarian, Sri Supartini, in Pucang Sewu, Gubeng Sub-district, Surabaya, East Java, on Tuesday.

"Praise be to God, we still have a centenarian in Surabaya. This demonstrates that the life expectancy of Surabaya residents is increasing from year to year," Armuji remarked while meeting Supartini.

While the Surabaya authorities recorded the city's life expectancy at 74.15 years in 2019 and 2020, the figure increased to 74.18 years in 2021, the deputy mayor noted.

"From the parameter, we also understand that the healthcare service in Surabaya is improving, as well as environmental conditions and infrastructure and residents' nutritional adequacy," he said.

Sri Supartini, who celebrated her 100th birthday on June 30, 2022, said she did not expect the deputy mayor to pay a visit to her.

Despite her old age, she still looked healthy and could communicate properly without any assistance. The centenarian also cracked a joke while conversing with the deputy mayor.

"Ah, the one who visits (me) is the deputy mayor, what souvenir do you bring here?" Supartini remarked in Javanese. Armuji and officials who accompanied him responded with laughter.

She said that she lived through the Dutch colonial period, the Japanese occupation, and the independence struggle, and experienced many things until today.

Maintaining appropriate dietary habits and taking daily exercise by strolling around her home every day are her habits for maintaining health in old age, Supartini added.

Before departing from the centenarian's home, the deputy mayor presented souvenirs and fruits to her and prayed for her well-being.

"We hope Grandma Supartini will always be healthy," Armuji remarked.
