"Our current homework is to organize two more democratic elections to finalize the consolidation of our democracy. The two elections are the 2024 and 2029 General Elections," Widjojanto noted in a seminar broadcast by the Satya Wacana Christian University (UKSW) Salatiga YouTube channel observed here Monday.
Lemhannas governor's remarks were made during the "Developing National Outlook in the Information Disruption Era: Jokowi Government's Strategy to Maintain National Security" seminar organized by UKSW in Salatiga, Central Java.
Indonesia will face greater challenges in the next two elections as compared to the earlier elections -- which had been organized consistently in five-year intervals since 1999 -- as all national and regional executives and legislatures would be elected simultaneously, he stated.
Widjojanto highlighted that all national stakeholders should improve the electoral and political party systems to consolidate Indonesia's democracy and election.
"We must adopt technology in our electoral system. We must improve our political party system. We must bolster political party institutions better than now to consolidate our democracy," the governor emphasized.
Consolidation of democracy must be realized as an effort to unite perspectives among national stakeholders to commit to democratic agendas by assuring democratic elections that will be followed by the residents' prosperity, he remarked.
He stated that despite having no causal relations, there is an association between the maturing of democracy and the national gross domestic product (GDP).
"There are no causal relations, but there is an association between the GDP per capita and the maturing of democracy. The GDP per capita of countries with matured democracy usually surpassed US$6,000 per capita. Our (GDP per capita) is still at US$4,000 per capita, and we need to pursue the other US$2,000 to achieve the ideal criteria of a country with matured democracy," Widjojanto expounded.
The Lemhannas governor earlier remarked that the consolidation of Indonesian democracy is one of the five main issues that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) urged the institute to prioritize.
Apart from the consolidation of democracy, the other areas of focus of Lemhannas are green economy, blue economy, digital transformation, and the development of new capital, he noted.
