Jakarta (ANTARA) - The COVID-19 Handling Task Force has reported that at least 53.89 million Indonesians received the third or booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as of Friday.

According to the task force data received here on Friday, the number of booster dose recipients grew by 60,737 to touch 53,891,018.

Meanwhile, the number of second dose recipients swelled by 15,488 on Friday, taking the total count to 169,719,432.

The data also showed that the number of people taking at least the first dose increased by 23,686 to reach 202,103,683 so far.

As part of the efforts to boost community immunity against COVID-19, the Indonesian government launched a nationwide vaccination program on January 13, 2021. President Joko Widodo was the first vaccine recipient under the program.

The government is targeting as many as 208,265,720 citizens across the country to get the vaccine.

Earlier, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin sought an increase in the third or booster COVID-19 vaccination coverage amid an increase in infections in Indonesia.

On the sidelines of his visit to several schools in Bogor District, West Java, on Thursday, Sadikin said that the risk of COVID-19 could be 20 folds higher among people, who have not received the booster shot.

"We want more (people to get the booster) because cases are surging," he emphasized.

The minister ensured that the availability of COVID-19 vaccines in the country is still sufficient. Hence, the community has been urged to get vaccinated promptly.

The first case of COVID-19 in Indonesia was confirmed in March 2020. According to data from the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, as of July 22, 2022, the nation had recorded 6,159,328 COVID-19 cases, 5,964,196 recoveries, and 156,893 deaths.
