Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Bambang Soesatyo urged the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to undertake various preventive efforts to mitigate the impact of the dry season occurring in most areas, including East Java.

"The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency must take preventive measures in addition to coordinating with the local district or municipal Regional Disaster Mitigation Agencies with regard to the threat of disasters during the dry season, especially drought disasters to forest and land fires," Soesatyo delivered his remark as quoted from a written statement here on Tuesday.

The peak of the dry season occurs in most areas, including in East Java, which was forecast to occur during the period from August to September 2022.

According to Soesatyo, it is important for the BPBD to anticipate various likely drought disasters in each region.

He also urged the agency and regional governments to stay alert and be on the lookout for any incoming regional reports related to disasters or emergencies during times of the peak of the dry season.

"(For) the regional government, (do) remind the community and farmers about the peak of the dry season in some areas, especially the East Java region," he emphasized.

He stated that warnings by regional governments regarding the peak of the dry season were necessary in order to prevent people from starting fires and carelessly discarding cigarette butts around flammable sections of soil.

He also reminded farmers to exercise caution upon spotting weather anomalies in the dry season that could result in losses for farmers.
