Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government will oversee the 2024 elections as optimally as possible in order to ensure that they run smoothly, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD stated.

Mahfud MD made the statement while delivering a speech at the launch of the election channel at a private television station in Jakarta, Monday night (Aug 1), as quoted in a statement on Tuesday.

All aspects pertaining to election preparations, including legal instruments, budgets, institutions, and scheduling have been discussed with the General Elections Commission (KPU), the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and the House of Representatives (DPR).

"(This is to ensure) that there is no misunderstanding. For example, there is news today that the election is a bit sluggish because the government funds are slow to disburse, then that is not true. It is because it has been discussed with the KPU and all working partners. The funds needed are fully provided by the government," Mahfud MD remarked.

Currently, Mahfud MD said the proposed additional KPU budget approved by the government reaches Rp1.24 trillion.

"The KPU just needs to make a budget implementation list (DIPA). If the DIPA is ready, then the budget can be disbursed. Hence, the government guarantees this. Next, the budget will be provided," Mahfud stated at the event also attended by the KPU Chair, Bawaslu Chair, and leaders of the political party.

Mahfud explained that the KPU's proposals had been approved, such as an increase in fees for the committee, although it was not 100 percent.

However, the operational activities, such as the construction of buildings in the regions, had not been approved.

He advised the KPU to work hard with professionalism.

"Brothers, to the KPU, I want to convey a message that you must really work hard, organize this election as well as possible, with full professionalism, because whatever you do, there would be someone who will sue. There is no election without a lawsuit," Mahfud emphasized.

He also invited all Indonesian people to wholeheartedly welcome the 2024 General Election.

Mahfud expressed optimism that the 2024 election would produce new members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Legislative Council (DPRD), Regional Representatives Council (DPD), as well as new president and vice president to further advance Indonesia.
