Fellows (of) the General Elections Commission, I want to convey a message. You must be serious, host this election as best as possible with the utmost professionalism.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD has asked the General Elections Commission (KPU) to be committed to working professionally in organizing the 2024 General Elections.

"Fellows (of) the General Elections Commission, I want to convey a message. You must be serious, host this election as best as possible with the utmost professionalism. Because whatever you do, there will be someone who will sue. There is no election without a lawsuit. It has always been like that since long ago," the minister said in a written statement here on Tuesday.

He also urged everyone to respond to the 2024 elections in a positive manner. He said he expected the elections to produce officials, such as members of the House of Representatives, the Regional House of Representatives, Regional Representative Board, the president, and the vice president who are committed to improving Indonesia.

The government will pursue the election as best as possible, he added. Regarding the preparations for the 2024 elections, the government has held discussions with the General Elections Commission, House of Representatives, and election monitoring agency on all necessary matters, including legal instruments, budgets, institutions, and scheduling.

"So that there is no misunderstanding. For example, there is news today that the election is a bit on the slower side because the government's funds took a while to be disbursed; that's not true, because it has been provided by the General Elections Commission and all stakeholders. The funds needed are fully provided by the government," he explained.

Currently, the mutually agreed upon funds available are Rp1.24 trillion in total, he elaborated. The funds will be disbursed gradually in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

"It's just that if it's not disbursed now, it is easy to solve it. The General Elections Commission only needs to make the budget listing. If the budget listing is ready, then (it's all good). If the budget listing doesn't exist, then can't (be disbursed) because it would violate the state financial budget (stipulation). Therefore, the government guarantees this. The next year funding is provided, so the next year (budget is) provided," he said.

He further said that the government has approved, although not fully, the General Elections Commission's proposal regarding an increase in fees for the committee. However, regarding activities such as buildings in the regions, the government is yet to approve them, he added.
