Through the co-firing program, PLN is mixing sawdust with coal.
Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) is using sawdust as fuel to lower carbon dioxide emissions at its Asam Asam thermal power plant (PLTU) in Asri Mulia Village, Jorong Sub-district, Tanah Laut District, South Kalimantan.

"Through the co-firing program, PLN is mixing sawdust with coal," manager of PLN's Asam Asam Generation Unit, Dani Esa Windiarto, said in Pelaihari, South Kalimantan, on Tuesday.

The state-owned electricity provider has been using biomass as a substitute for coal at the Asam Asam PLTU since October 2021, he added.

With the application of 5 percent co-firing at the PLTU, the operational parameters of generator equipment remain safe and several parameters of emissions decline, he informed.

In June 2022 alone, the co-firing program produced green energy of 855 megawatts per hour (MWh) and lowered more than 5 thousand metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions equivalent (CO2-eq).

"This proves our commitment to supporting the government's effort to curb carbon dioxide emissions and accelerate (the attainment of) 23 percent share of new and renewable energy mix (in the power sector) by 2025," Windiarto said.

In addition to benefiting the environment, Asam Asan PLTU's co-firing program can also have a positive impact on the local people's economy, he added.

PLN aims to form a circular economy by involving local people in providing sawdust for the program so the economic value of sawdust will increase accordingly.
