Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung (ANTARA) - Bangka Belitung Islands' Communication and Informatics Office (Diskominfo) has set its sights on improving the internet network infrastructure to expedite digital inclusion in villages and remote islands in the province.

"We have prepared the internet network distribution strategy concept to expedite this digital inclusion," Head of Bangka Belitung Islands Diskominfo Sudarman noted here on Thursday.

Sudarman noted that accelerating digital inclusion in these remote regions aligns with the direction of Indonesia's digital development policy.

This aims to ensure that citizens across Indonesia, especially in Bangka Belitung Islands, can obtain easy and free access and rights over internet network and services.

"This distribution of network facility improvement is very important, so that all strata of society can easily access the internet," he remarked.

Currently, the demand for information, communication, and internet became foundational in all fields, Sudarman pointed out.

The demand for digital information is driven by several supporting factors comprising transformation of humans as social creatures to the cyber world, or homo cyber, and the advancements in information and communication technology.

The other factors are the start of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0, the COVID-19 pandemic, competitiveness, and the increase in services, such as e-commerce.

"Currently, the number of Indonesians connected to the internet reaches 210,026,769 out of the population of 272,682,600, while the level of internet penetration in Indonesia had reached 77.02 percent," he noted.

The latest development and situation posed a problem in the effort to distribute internet access through the Palapa Ring, specifically for island provinces in Indonesia, Sudarman stated.

"According to Bangka Belitung's Diskominfo database, thus far, it was recorded that at least 64 regional points do not yet have network," he stated.
