While waiting for Personal Data Protection Bill's ratification into law, the government continues to carry out personal data protection practice and enforcement through various effortsJakarta (ANTARA) - The government is continuing to support personal data protection while awaiting the ratification of the Personal Data Protection Bill (RUU PDP) into law, an official from the Communication and Informatics Ministry, Bambang Gunawan, has said.
"Currently, the ministry is waiting for the continuation of RUU PDP discussion that already exists in the House of Representatives," he informed during a webinar streamed on YouTube on Thursday.
"While waiting for Personal Data Protection Bill's ratification into law, the government continues to carry out personal data protection practice and enforcement through various efforts," he added.
These efforts include encouraging the implementation of educational programs to raise people's awareness on the importance of personal data protection through stakeholders on a broader scale.
Next, the ministry is carrying out the development of information and communication technology infrastructure, from upstream to downstream, to realize digital migration distribution.
For instance, during 2015–2020, the Ministry's Telecommunication and Informatics Accessibility Agency (BAKTI) built 213 4G network base transceiver stations (BTS) in Papua and 244 4G BTS in West Papua.
"In 2022, BAKTI will continue the construction of 2,765 4G BTS, namely 2,220 in Papua and 545 in West Papua," he noted.
The construction of the base transceiver stations is aimed to help Papua and West Papua residents to participate in the digital era, he explained during the “Digital Law and Human Rights Literacy Forum” webinar themed “#TorangBisaBerdaya: Be Critical to Protect Personal Data.”
The development of information and communication technology infrastructure is being undertaken along with digital literacy or educational activities for Papua and West Papua residents, such as Thursday’s webinar, so that they can understand how to use the Internet safely.
"Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and the Indonesian Internet Service Organizer Association (APJII) in 2018 stated that the number of Internet users in Papua is the highest in the eastern Indonesian region," he informed.
"This should be followed by literacy on safe Internet utilization," he added.
