Currently, 285 districts and cities in 24 provinces have been affected by the FMD outbreak. The total number of infected animals has touched 481,543 heads, comprising 458,433 cattle, 17,751 buffaloes, 1,719 sheep, 3,552 goats, and 88 pigs.
According to the task force data, the number of recovered animals has reached 313,490, comprising 298,416 cattle, 11,505 buffaloes, 1,182 sheep, 2,355 goats, and 32 pigs.
Meanwhile, 151,897 animals have not recovered, namely 144,230 cattle, 6,053 buffaloes, 484 sheep, 1,074 goats, and 56 pigs.
A total of 6,319 farm animals have died, comprising 6,117 cattle, 121 buffaloes, 36 sheep, and 45 goats. The number of animals that have been conditionally slaughtered has reached 9,837, comprising 9,670 cattle, 72 buffaloes, 17 sheep, and 78 goats.
To check FMD transmission, the Ministry of Agriculture launched a vaccination program for livestock from Sidoarjo district, East Java, on June 14, 2022.
Vaccine doses are being prioritized for healthy animals that are at high risk of infection, such as animals at livestock breeding centers, community-owned dairy farms, dairy cooperatives, and beef cattle farms.
Earlier, the FMD task force asked Indonesians not to hesitate to consume meat since the disease is not transmissible to humans.
"Products from cattle in (zones with a high rate of foot-and-mouth disease spread) are safe to be consumed," deputy coordinator of the FMD task force, Brigadier General Ary Laksmana Widjaja, assured.
A red zone is an area where FMD infections among farm animals, such as cattle, goats, sheep, buffaloes, and pigs, have reached 70 percent, he said.
All processed products from red zones have been allowed to be brought to other areas with a lower FMD infection rate since the products go through multiple processes to make them safe to consume, including ensuring they are free from the disease.
