Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) has urged migrant workers to exercise caution while vetting online employment offers in light of a recent case of Indonesian migrant workers being defrauded in Cambodia.

BP2MI's director of protection and empowerment in the Asia and Africa regions, Brigadier General Suyanto, said that the Indonesian migrant workers who were defrauded in Cambodia were recruited through multi-level recruitment and online offers.

"The model deployed was multi-level (recruitment), hence, perhaps their partners in Cambodia and other countries were sharing the (recruitment offer) contents with each other," he added at a press conference held at the BP2MI office here on Tuesday.

He said that the high salary and easy work promoted by the bogus employment offer circulating on social media enticed victims to apply for the job.

Moreover, the employment offer also advertised the convenience of working overseas without needing to undergo procedures required in the official and legal recruitment process, he added.

"Residents must pay attention; if they want to apply (for a job), they must first look for the company profile to examine whether (the company) has a license or is recognized as a legal entity and holds a license from the Manpower Ministry or our agency," Suyanto said.

Meanwhile, BP2MI head Benny Rhamdani informed that the government has repatriated 241 Indonesian migrant workers who were defrauded through an online recruitment offer in Cambodia.

The agency, in collaboration with other institutions, also successfully foiled the departure of 215 Indonesian migrant workers to Cambodia from Kuala Namu International Airport, North Sumatra, after receiving a tip from the Foreign Affairs Ministry on August 12, 2022, he said.

BP2MI will also enhance coordination with the relevant government ministries, the COVID-19 handling task force, and airport authorities to address the issue of Indonesian migrant workers being defrauded and stranded in Cambodia, he added.
