"The Penglipuran tourism village has a very unique local wisdom, known as 'Karang Memadu,' which is contained in the traditional village law, wherein polygamy is not allowed in the Penglipuran tourism village," Bangli District Head Sang Nyoman Sedana Arta stated here on Friday.
"Villagers, who practice polygamy, will be subject to customary sanctions to live in a special place called 'karang memadu'. This is a form of protection for women," he stated in connection with the traditions and culture of Balinese Hindus.
The delegates were greeted with the Gabor dance by young women during a tour of Penglipuran village, one of the best tourism villages in Indonesia.
Penglipuran was named the top three cleanest villages in the world according to the "Green Destinations Foundation 2019" version.
"The (G20 member countries') delegations attending the Ministerial Conference On Women's Empowerment (MCWE) personally visit Bali's tourist destinations that will later be promoted at the G20 Nusa Dua Bali event in October 2022," the Bangli district head stated.
Sedana Arta expressed optimism that after the visit to Penglipuran, the delegates would be able to gain valuable experiences that could promote efforts to empower women by developing tourism villages.
The G20 MCWE 2022 was themed “Recover Together, Recover Stronger to Close Gender Gap.”
The MCWE, which is part of the G20 series of events, focused on three main topics: the “Economic Aspects of Post-COVID-19 Care: Missed Opportunities in the Labor Market”; “Closing the Digital Gender Gap: Women’s Participation in the Digital Economy and Future Work”; and “Women’s Entrepreneurship: Accelerating Equality and Accelerating Recovery.”
Bali will host the 2022 G20 Summit on November 15-16.
