I appreciate that the said law criminalizes torture, ill-treatment, inhuman punishment, and enforced disappearance
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Yuyun Wahyuningrum welcomed adoption of Law on the Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance by the Thai Parliament on August 24, 2022.

“I appreciate that the said law criminalizes torture, ill-treatment, inhuman punishment, and enforced disappearance,” Wahyuningrum noted in a statement here, Saturday.

The passing of such a law in Thailand will contribute to the ongoing initiative of AICHR in engaging some ASEAN member states to realize Southeast Asia as a torture-free region.

While only six ASEAN member states -- Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand -- having ratified the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT), Article 14 of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD) guarantees that everyone has the right to be protected from torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.

“On this occasion, I would like to call on the ASEAN member states to join in the efforts to realize the universal ratification of the UN CAT,” she stated.

Working with ASEAN member states, the AICHR generates discussion, shares best practices, and conducts capacity building activities to prevent torture in the region since 2015.
