On behalf of the government, we have agreed to deliberate on it together (in the parliament).
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government has agreed to further deliberate on the parliament-initiated bill on the creation of Southwest Papua province, Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian has informed.

"On behalf of the government, we have agreed to deliberate on it together (in the parliament)," he said in Jakarta on Monday.

The deliberation on the bill must pay attention to its harmony with other related laws in terms of formal, technical, material, and substantial aspects, he added.

“Particularly, the crucial matters that we need to observe and anticipate wisely," he said.

In addition, the government also appreciates the initiative right of the House of Representatives (DPR), which proposed the bill, he added.

President Joko Widodo has assigned Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of National Development Planning and head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Suharso Monoarfa, and Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly to represent the government in deliberations on the bill.

The deliberations on the bill must ensure and give room to the indigenous people of Papua in terms of political, administrative, economic, and sociocultural activities, Karnavian said.

The measure is needed to expedite development programs, improve public services, increase public welfare, and promote the honor and dignity of indigenous Papuan people, he added.

He expressed the hope that the establishment of Southwest Papua province will accelerate the realization of developmental programs in the region through the constant observation of political, administrative, and legal aspects, sociocultural unity or customary regions, preparedness of human resources, basic infrastructures, and economic capacity.

The creation of Southwest Papua province is based on Article 76 of Law No. 2 of 2021 concerning the second round of amendment to Law No. 21 of 2001 concerning Special Autonomy for Papua Province.
