Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta-owned bus service company PT TransJakarta will help manage the bus rapid transit (BRT) public transportation system in Greater Bandung, West Java.

"We are very happy with the MoU (memorandum of understanding) because the experience of TransJakarta can be used for Bandung, West Java," Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan remarked after witnessing the signing of an MoU between TransJakarta and West Java province-owned investment holding company Jasa Sarana, here on Wednesday.

The MoU was signed by president director of TransJakarta, M. Yana Aditya, and the acting director of PT Jasa Sarana, Indrawan Sumantri, and witnessed by Baswedan and the head of the West Java Transportation Office, Koeswara.

According to Baswedan, the challenge of urbanization is that it increases the use of private vehicles.

Hence, he said, it is necessary to manage public transportation services in an integrated way so that the public would want to shift to mass transportation.

During the past four years, the Jakarta Governor said, his administration has changed the orientation of urban development to transit-oriented development (TOD) by using electric buses, with the aim of reducing carbon emissions that are a factor in climate change.

"We are pushing electric-based public transportation because these electric vehicles reduce the number of (private) vehicles because people are shifting to the public ones," he added.

Meanwhile, head of TransJakarta’s corporate secretary division, Anang Rizkani Noor, said that TransJakarta's 20 years of experience will be used to support the development of public transportation in West Java.

Jasa Sarana is engaged in infrastructure and regional development, while PT TransJakarta focuses on operating the BRT and transportation systems in Jakarta and its surrounding areas.

"With the background and experience of both parties, we hope that this collaboration can present a reliable, safe, and comfortable transportation system for the community to use," Noor added.
