Jakarta (ANTARA) - The General Elections Commission (KPU) will upgrade and enhance its cybersecurity system to prevent the leaking of general election data.

"All applications we use for general election organization will have their technology, including their safety, upgraded," KPU Commissioner Idham Holik informed here on Monday.

The electoral commission commends the concerns over data security expressed by the legislators of the House of Representatives' (DPR's) Commission II, he said adding that this demonstrates the parliament's attentiveness toward electoral data safety and security.

"As the general election organizer, we have anticipated (those aspects), because, in the information technology development, we must anticipate possible security system disruption in an information system. Our approach is not merely reactive, but mitigative as well," he explained.

Earlier, KPU affirmed that the agency's official website and electronic application are safe from cyber data leaks.

The agency had also organized a meeting with the commission's application and cybersecurity task force to discuss the KPU’s cyber and electronic data safety.

"During the meeting, no participants reported any finding about a data leak from the KPU website or application. Regarding the political party registration process, we assure that the Sipol (Political Party Information System) system is safe," Holik said.

The electoral commission's effort to update the national voter list is ongoing, he said adding, the KPU has urged officials in regions to be prudent and prioritize data safety while securing electoral data during election phases.

In July, the KPU and the Communication and Information Ministry had held discussions on strengthening communication technology to ensure the successful implementation of the 2024 General Elections.

"Today, the heads of institutions, both the Communication and Information Ministry and KPU RI, made a joint commitment to provide mutual support. The ministry will provide support related to its main tasks and functions, such as access and readiness of infrastructure," Communication and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate informed here on July 6, 2022.

In the upstream sector, he said, enhancing physical infrastructure, such as communication networks, will be a priority.

Meanwhile, in the downstream sector, digital services, such as digital applications for elections, will also be strengthened by the ministry.
