Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate has asked private electronic system providers (PSEs) to strengthen cybersecurity to secure people's data in electronic systems.

"Cyberattacks are also targeting private electronic systems; therefore, private PSEs are asked to ensure the security of data in their respective systems because it is an obligation," he said at a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs' building, here on Wednesday.

Plate asked PSEs to continuously update cybersecurity technology and use the most effective system management.

He also asked private PSEs to increase the capacity of digital talents working to secure public data so that security can be improved.

He then expressed the hope that strong encryption would be provided by PSEs.

Coordination and communication with the government are also expected to run smoothly.

"To private PSEs: don't be careless, continue to pay attention, and communicate with the government to get help if there are suspicions (of data leaks or breaches). Communicate with the government to get inputs to maintain the electronic system properly," he remarked.

Minister Plate made the statements after the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, announced the formation of a data protection task force to prevent data, especially state-related data, from being leaked or hacked.

The formation of the task force involved the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN), the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), the Ministry of Communication and Information, and the National Police.

Minister Mahfud explained that the task force was formed in response to a cyberattack by a hacker called “Bjorka,” which reminded Indonesians of the importance of building a more advanced cybersecurity system.

The formation of the task force was also based on the mandate of the Law on Personal Data Protection, which is expected to be ratified by the House of Representatives (DPR) soon.
