Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Communication and Information Ministry will prepare a Digital Broadcasting System (DBS) in 2023 for 113 blank spot areas not covered by analog television broadcasting services.

"For these 113 regions, we have planned the (implementation of the) Digital Broadcasting System (DBS). (Meanwhile, state-run broadcaster) TVRI has planned that there will be (infrastructure development for digital broadcasting) in another 256 locations," director of broadcasting of the ministry, Geryantika Kurnia, said at a press conference here on Friday.

The term “blank spot area” refers to regions that can only access television broadcasts through satellite and paid television services.

The condition leads to residents in the areas spending more money on installing expensive infrastructure to enjoy the broadcast services, the director noted.

Earlier, the Indonesian government had discussed a number of cooperation potentials with foreign governments, including the French government, regarding the development of the DBS.

It was also discussed in a meeting between Indonesian Communication and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate and French Minister of Foreign Trade, Olivier Becht, on Wednesday (September 21, 2022).

Plate said that the DBS, which is being prepared through cooperation with France, has entered the technical discussion stage, that is, the stage before the cooperation contract is discussed.

In this digital transformation era, the Indonesian government is striving to make the national digital television migration program a success.

Hence, in addition to preparing the DBS, the ministry is also conducting the Analog Switch-Off (ASO) program, which requires people living in areas that have not been covered by analog television broadcasts to switch to digital television broadcasting services.

As of Friday, the ASO program has been implemented in 18 television broadcast areas.

On October 5, the program will also be carried out in Greater Jakarta area, which includes Central Jakarta, North Jakarta, West Jakarta, South Jakarta, East Jakarta, Kepulauan Seribu district, Bekasi district, Bogor district, Bekasi city, Bogor city, Depok city, Tangerang district, Tangerang city, and South Tangerang city.

Meanwhile, the ASO will be implemented nationwide on November 2.
