We are all shocked when we heard that there was an upheaval that led to the loss of many lives at Kanjuruhan Stadium
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief Secretary of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Lilik Kurniawan emphasized the criticality of the localization concept to implement disaster risk reduction (DRR) in responding to the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy in Malang, East Java.

At the 15th National Conference on Community-Based Disaster Risk Mitigation held online here on Monday, Kurniawan remarked that the stadium is one of the seven venues mapped by BNPB that require local-scale DRR efforts.

Regarding local DRR, the regional and central governments must facilitate aspects required by communities to be resilient.

He also highlighted the government's function of facilitating and providing infrastructure for the people, so that they can become resilient without depending on the government or other parties during disaster events.

On the same occasion, Kurniawan expressed deep sorrow and empathy for the victims and affected families of the Kanjuruhan tragedy that resulted in the deaths of 170 people.

"We are all shocked when we heard that there was an upheaval that led to the loss of many lives at Kanjuruhan Stadium," he remarked.

With the tragedy that killed hundreds of Arema FC supporters, the chief secretary emphasized the need to map the local risk, the local authority that can mobilize disaster risk reduction, and local action.

"It was a tragedy for us. Hence, the localization concept is important for us to do," he remarked.

Regarding local action, he advised to observe the issues in infrastructure, disaster risk mitigation, and educational or literacy that should be part of the daily lives.

Furthermore, he reminded the public that October is the month of disaster risk reduction. Hence, to this end, he expected all officials, the community, and volunteers to make substantial efforts to reduce the risk of disasters near them.
