Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Government will provide Rp50 million in compensation to the families of each victim of the stampede that broke out at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang District, East Java Province, on Saturday, and claimed 125 lives.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, conveyed the remarks at an online press conference here on Monday.

"The compensation from Mr. President Jokowi (Joko Widodo) is Rp50 million for each of the 125 victims; hopefully, it is seen as a sign of empathy and the presence of the state. Don't look at the number, but the empathy of the head of state and the presence of the state," he said.

The compensation also demonstrates the President’s condolences to the deaths of so many people in the incident of violence and stampede following a football match.

"Although, of course, the loss of life of each person cannot be assessed with any money. But the President is pleased to provide compensation of Rp50 million to each victim, and this will be implemented immediately," he announced.

Currently, he said, the government is in the process of matching administrative data with the regional governments or other institutions that administer it.

"I think it won't take long for the data to match. We just need to ask the local government for the names and addresses of the 125 people," Mahfud said.

The government will try to simplify bureaucratic procedures in providing the compensation, the minister added.

"Maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, if the funds are ready, we can execute it. But we have to know the names and addresses first. It won't take long. It won't be long-winded," he said.

Regarding the injured victims, Mahfud has directed the Health Minister to ensure that the costs of their care and treatment are borne by the state.
