Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) is being implemented to ensure the sustainable management of forests, Environment and Forestry Deputy Minister Alue Dohong told Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR) here on Monday.

SLVK is being implemented as part of the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade in Timber Products-Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT VPA), which seeks to ensure that timber products obtained from illegal activities are not accepted by Indonesia's partners, in this case, the United Kingdom government.

This can be realized thanks to a system that tracks the origin of timber products from the upstream. Thus, timber products obtained from illegal activities automatically do not enter the FELGT VPA system.

"This also encourages our timber businessmen, including in the upstream, to continue to conduct sustainable management by not accepting illegal wood," Dohong said.

The ministry has also requested approval for the ratification of FLEGT VPA between Indonesia and the United Kingdom in the form of a Presidential Regulation.

Responding to this, deputy chief of Commission VI, Mohamad Hekal, read the conclusion of the work meeting that approved the request.

"DPR Commission VI has approved the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade in Timber Products-Voluntary Partnership Agreement ratification between Indonesia and the United Kingdom through the Presidential Regulation mechanism," he said.

During the work meeting, Dohong also noted that the government is continuing to expand people's access to forest area management, such as through social forestry.

The government aims to provide management rights over 12.7 million hectares of forest land to people residing around them by 2024, he said.

According to the ministry's data, as of August 1, 2022, the realization of social forestry has reached 5,030,736 hectares, whose rights have been given to 1,113,234 family heads.
