Strengthening synergy and collaboration in placement governance and protection of PMIs, specifically in terms of job opportunities
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI) has strengthened synergy with local governments and other related stakeholders in an effort to protect Indonesian migrant workers (PMI).

"Strengthening synergy and collaboration in placement governance and protection of PMIs, specifically in terms of job opportunities," BP2MI Head Benny Rhamdani remarked here on Wednesday after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on PMI protection with several regional governments.

The government strives to ensure that Indonesian migrant workers follow the legal procedures in applying for job opportunities abroad to avoid human trafficking crimes.

Rhamdani urged local governments to support the government's efforts in preventing the practice of illegal placement of migrant workers.

He said that illegal placement poses danger to migrant workers, such as the risk of not getting a decent salary and becoming victims of crime, as they do not have a legal employment contract.

"On the other hand, official placement is a certain placement. We assure that they will get a service from the government," he affirmed.

According to the BP2MI data, during the period from 2020 to September 13, 2022, a total of 1,421 corpses of Indonesian migrant workers had been transported back home. Some of the migrant workers, who died overseas, reportedly did not follow the legal procedures.

During that period, the BP2MI also handled 79,153 Indonesian migrant workers, who had encountered problems in their placement country.

In order to prevent the practice of illegal placement and improve workers' protection, BP2MI collaborates with some local governments, comprising the Sungai Penuh City Government, West Pasaman District, Sawahlunto City, Pariaman City, Sijunjung District, Bondowoso District, Pamekasan District, Lamongan District, Sampang District, Sidoarjo District, and regional-owned Bank BJB.

BP2MI also coordinates with the Communication and Informatics Ministry to remove advertisements on illegal recruitment of Indonesian migrant workers on social media.
