"The Bali provincial government is providing post-disaster assistance in the form of compensation of Rp15 million for victims who died due to the extreme weather and Rp10 million for victims undergoing treatment at the hospital,"acting Head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Made Rentin conveyed the information in Denpasar, Bali, on Monday.
Six victims came from Bangli district: three of them died in landslides and three others are currently undergoing treatment at Bangli Hospital.
Meanwhile, one victim died in Gianyar district, and one victim reportedly died after being swept away by floodwaters in Denpasar city. Bali BPBD officers are also providing assistance to 33 tourists in the Seminyak area, Badung, he added.
"It consists of 23 foreigners and 10 domestic tourists, who want to leave the hotel for sightseeing," Rentin said.
He also denied news reports that the evacuated victims were solely foreign tourists.
When the height of the floodwater was low to moderate, tourists only asked for help to get out of the hotel so that they could continue their tourism agenda in Bali, he clarified.
Meanwhile, cash assistance was provided after the heavy rain, which led to landslides, fallen trees, collapsed walls, broken roads, and floods in seven districts/cities in Bali, Rentin said.
Besides providing assistance, BPBD has taken several anticipatory measures, such as increasing coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region III to update early warning information.
"We are increasing awareness on the potential for extreme weather and improving coordination between the relevant agencies and the apparatus to take preparedness steps, according to the main tasks of their respective functions and authorities," Rentin said.
In addition to BMKG, coordination has been carried out with the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Indonesian Defense Force (TNI), Police, Public Works and Public Housing Service, and volunteers, among others.
Rentin also asked Bali residents to remain vigilant and careful of extreme weather, considering that Bali has been witnessing heavy rains since the end of September.
The peak occurred on Saturday (October 8) morning and caused a number of disasters, which will need to be watched out for in the next week based on the weather forecast.
