Women workers have dual roles, namely as housewives and workers who need to improve their capacity at work, the ministry's director general of labor supervision and occupational health and safety Haiyani Rumondang noted during a virtual discussion organized by the ministry on Tuesday.
The discussion aimed to improve people's understanding regarding the protection of children and women workers' reproductive function for business continuity, she explained.
The situation is tougher for women during menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. In fact, women are mothers of the nation's future generation.
On account of these natural circumstances, the rights of women workers must be protected, she stressed.
"Women workers must get protection so that their rights as women workers can still be fulfilled," she said.
According to Rumondang, Indonesia has ratified the International Labour Organization (ILO) convention on equal pay for men and women workers for the same job and the convention against discrimination in employment and occupation.
Indonesia has also ratified the United Nations (UN) convention on the eradication of all forms of discrimination against women.
She affirmed that the Ministry of Manpower has issued a regulation regarding provisions for women who work at night.
Earlier, the Manpower Ministry urged all stakeholders to prioritize the realization of workplaces that are free of discrimination and ensure that preventive efforts against sexual violence are in place.
"One of the things that we need to pay attention to is realizing the comfort of working without discrimination and preventing sexual violence in workplaces," the ministry's director of labor relations and wages, Dinar Titus Jogaswitani, said at an ILO Indonesia discussion here on September 28, 2022.
