"We ensure that residents affected by floods in Mamuju and Majene districts will get assistance," Bitticaca remarked while monitoring the flood condition here on Wednesday.
Based on data as of Wednesday afternoon, floods and landslides mostly impacted three villages in Kalukku Sub-district, Mamuju, affecting 1,625 household heads, or 5,271 people.
Meanwhile, the West Sulawesi Police deployed its personnel to assist affected residents.
When the floods hit Mamuju and Majene on Tuesday (October 11) afternoon, Bitticaca said his side immediately deployed a search and rescue (SAR) team from the province's Mobile Brigade (Brimob), police's on-the-alert unit (Samapta), and Mamuju Police to facilitate evacuation of the victims.
"Yesterday (October 11), during the incident, we had deployed personnel and today, I review directly the condition of the locations affected by the disaster and ensure that the victims receive assistance," Bitticaca explained.
The personnel also set up field kitchen vehicles and assisted in cleaning roads and houses from flooding and landslide materials.
"There are some families, who choose to evacuate to safer places or to their (other) family's home because some of their houses are no longer habitable or they are still traumatized," the West Sulawesi police chief stated.
Heavy rains from day to night on Tuesday (October 11) in Mamuju and Majene resulted in flooding in the region.
High-intensity rains also caused a landslide that cut off access to the road connecting the districts of Mamuju and Majene.
Flooding also submerged several school buildings, houses, and rice fields owned by residents.
Floods affected 130 household heads, or 340 people, in Pamulakan Village; 1,121 household heads, or 3,430 people, in Sinyonyoi Village; and 374 household heads, or 1,501 people, in South Sinyonyoi.
