Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has urged the younger generation to collaborate on research and innovation development, noting that the interest of Indonesian youngsters in science is severely lagging compared to other countries.

"Let us research together with BRIN while having BRIN pay for your study," a researcher from the agency’s Preclinical and Clinical Medical Research Center, Reza Yuridian Purwoko, said during the “BRIN Science Show” here on Friday.

"Let us combine research with BRIN," he added.

Indonesia has abundant resources. The role of the younger generation is to optimize their potential through technology, if necessary, he said.

However, Indonesian youngsters' capability and interest in science are a cause for concern. Indonesia ranked 74 out of 80 countries in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey in 2018.

BRIN has the responsibility of cultivating the interest of youngsters, currently dominated by millennials, in addition to performing its duty as a research institution.

The goal is to connect science to the younger generation to pass on the scientific baton.

To this end, BRIN has opened itself so that science and technology becomes one of the fields that millennials are interested in.

Working as a researcher can also be beneficial for getting scholarships for master’s studies as well as obtaining employment more easily, Purwoko said.

Meanwhile, a researcher from BRIN's Biomass and Bioproduct Research Center, Widya Fatriasari, said that research is a simple process and can begin by observing the things around us.

Youngsters' disinterest in research has emerged due to a misconception that research is a complicated matter and requires the use of the latest technology.

However, simple concepts that can be applied to society can be beneficial. Thus, high technology is not necessary, she said.

The “BRIN Science Show” featured exhibitions, product introductions, science demonstrations, and researchers' talk shows with visitors along with popular activities, such as a fashion week and music show.

The talk show raised two themes based on the lifestyle and inputs of the visitors' segment, namely cosmetics and health.
