However, the common thread is that everyone agrees that there has to be regulation, management of cross-border data flow and data free flow with trustJakarta (ANTARA) - The management of cross-border data flow and the concept of data free flow with trust (DFFT) are important for the development of the digital economy, according to the Communication and Information Ministry.
"There are several issues that we have discussed and understood from the perspective of each G20 country," director general of informatics application at the ministry, Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, noted during an online broadcast on “Expediting Digital Transformation through G20” on Tuesday.
"However, the common thread is that everyone agrees that there has to be regulation, management of cross-border data flow and data free flow with trust," he said.

The free flow of cross-border data would facilitate business, however, its management would need to be resolved for more implementable agreements and digital economy development, he added.
Cross-border data flow and DFFT were among the main topics discussed by the 2022 G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG).
They were discussed in order to create a beneficial digital space and obtain data with high economic value while also considering the element of data sovereignty.
Discussions on the main digital economy issues put four management principles—lawfulness, fairness, transparency, and reciprocity—into focus for Indonesia.

Specifically, during the discussion on cross-border data flow management, the four principles were considered the most important to enforce since they relate to reciprocity in bilateral data management.
Moreover, Pangerapan noted this topic is also related to the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP), which seeks to maintain the sovereignty of the virtual space in Indonesia.
"This law follow its subject. When (data) cross a border, it will be beyond the jurisdiction," he said.
"If there is any data abuse by other countries, we can pursue it through the laws that the countries have," he added.
