There are still minimal alternative jobs, especially the lack of company awareness to recruit workers with disabilities
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah appealed to companies to improve their awareness of hiring workers with disabilities in accordance with the mandate of Law Number 8 of 2016 on People with Disabilities.

At an awards event for companies and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) that have employed persons with disabilities held here on Monday, Fauziyah noted that the percentage of disabled people running their own businesses was 1.5 folds more than those without disabilities.

Despite it being a positive trend, it also showed that several persons with disabilities have to run their own businesses due to the lack of opportunities for alternative jobs and to enter the job market.

"There are still minimal alternative jobs, especially the lack of company awareness to recruit workers with disabilities," she said.

In fact, Law Number 8 of 2016 stipulated the percentage of workers with disabilities must be allocated at no less than two percent in central and regional governments as well as SOEs and regional-owned enterprises (BUMD) and at least one percent in private companies.

To this end, the Ministry of Manpower lauded companies and SOEs that have provided opportunities for persons with disabilities to work.

At Monday's event, a total of 12 national awards were given to private companies and SOEs.

Minister Fauziyah expressed optimism that those who received the award would motivate companies to continue to remain committed and be more open in realizing the protection and fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities in the field of employment.

"The momentum of today's activity is expected to be able to realize the commitment of the central government and regional governments in inclusive employment services for persons with disabilities, so that they can realize their role and participation in development on the basis of equality," she remarked.
