Jakarta (ANTARA) - COVID-19 transmission in Indonesia has remained under control in early December 2022 ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said.

“Alhamdulillah (thank God), currently, the situation of COVID-19 spread is under control,” he said after attending the Germas Award 2022 at the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture here on Tuesday.

He further said that, based on his monitoring, the transmission has peaked; thus, the number of cases is expected to decline.

Data from the Health Ministry put the number of new COVID-19 cases at 4,977 on December 1, 2022. The number declined to 4,179 on December 2, reached 3,655 on December 3, dipped to 2,548 on December 4, and slid further to 2,234 on December 5.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had scheduled a cabinet meeting to discuss the trend of COVID-19 transmission as well as government policies to anticipate any potential increase in virus transmission during the Christmas and New Year holidays, Sadikin informed.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy affirmed that the COVID-19 situation in the country is currently not too worrying.

Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian has extended the enforcement of public activity restrictions (PPKM) to curb COVID-19 spread in the country.

He has issued two instructions—Instruction of the Minister of Home Affairs Number 50 of 2022 concerning the extension of PPKM in the Java and Bali areas and the Instruction of the Minister of Home Affairs Number 51 of 2022 concerning the extension of PPKM outside Java and Bali—that will be enforced from December 6 till January 9, 2023.

The two instructions have been issued to anticipate any potential increase in coronavirus transmission during the Christmas and New Year holidays due to an increase in people’s mobility.

Based on the instructions, all districts and cities in Indonesia are implementing Level 1 PPKM.

The first case of COVID-19 in Indonesia was confirmed in March 2020. According to data from the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, as of December 5, the nation has recorded 6,682,437 COVID-19 cases, 6,474,271 recoveries, and 160,026 deaths.
