Malang, East Java (ANTARA) - A 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck 233 kilometers south of Jember, East Java, on Tuesday did not cause any damage in Malang, the district’s Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said.

"So far, there have been no reports of damage because of the earthquake. The condition in Malang district is safe," the chief of Malang district BPBD Fuad Fauzi informed here on Tuesday.

According to him, there were no reports of damage in Malang district one hour after the earthquake.

The earthquake was recorded south of Jember city, East Java, and 10 km undersea, at 1:07 p.m. local time on Tuesday. The epicenter of the quake was located at 10.70 degrees south latitude and 113.38 degrees east longitude.

Based on data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake was felt in Jember, Gubukmas, Mataram, Kepanjen, and Sumberpucung at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) II, which means the vibrations felt like the passing of trucks and could be felt inside buildings.

A resident of Kepanjen sub-district, Eddy Santoso, said that the tremors were felt for a few seconds. However, they were mild and not strong, he added.

"There was a weak tremor during the earthquake. It was not a hard one, only lasted for two to three seconds," he said.
