"From 514 regions, only around 20 percent have regional regulations regarding (persons with) disabilities. Some of them are not in accordance with the law; there are still many that need to be revised," KND deputy chairperson Deka Kurniawan said at a press conference on the commission's first anniversary and the commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities here on Tuesday.
KND has expressed the hope that every year, regional regulations on disability rights would increase by 20 percent, and by the fifth anniversary of KND, all regional regulations will be in accordance with Law Number 8 of 2016 concerning Persons with Disabilities.
KND will continue to revise regional regulations that still use terms that are considered degrading and marginalize persons with disabilities in order to get rid of the stigma surrounding them.
"We will carry out strategic cooperation like what has been mandated by law and assigned by the President," he said.
He affirmed that the commission will assist regional governments because the problem lies with regional governments that still do not have a complete perspective on disabilities.
Kurniawan, along with the other KND commissioners, has provided assistance and asked persons with disabilities to map the state of disability rights fulfillment in their respective regions.
From the mapping, KND will make an analysis of what needs to be done and recommend what the needs of persons with disabilities are.
"We are also pushing for the budget to be met," he added.
In 2022, KND is commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with the theme "From Villages and Subdistricts toward an Inclusive and Disability-Friendly Indonesia.” The event will take place in Klaten, Central Java.
