If we compare our condition with other countries, we have been left behind, preceded by countries whose level was below us
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology has said that the Independent Learning Program is a breakthrough in addressing the learning crisis in Indonesia.

"In the implementation of the Independent Learning Program, we focus on our students. Moreover, we want to mitigate the learning crisis in Indonesia," the ministry's director general of early childhood education, elementary, and secondary education, Iwan Syahril, said.

He made the remarks at a national seminar on “Mutual Cooperation to Advance Education through the Mobilization of Organization Program” in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Learning progress in Indonesia has been slow for decades, he noted. And this condition has been made worse due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey in 2018, Indonesia ranked 74th or sixth from the bottom.

"If we compare our condition with other countries, we have been left behind, preceded by countries whose level was below us," Syahril pointed out.

Therefore, innovative interventions are needed to achieve breakthroughs in Indonesia's learning progress, he said.

"It cannot work with business as usual (approach). We must make a leap," he stressed.

He said that all programs launched by the ministry, including the Independent Learning Program, have been designed to overcome the learning crisis.

If the learning crisis in Indonesia can be resolved, quality human resources (HR) will emerge and accelerate regional development, he added.

"There are lots of ideas, lots of innovations, but if the human resources are not capable, it will not happen. If we have good human resources, even though the nature's condition is not good, we still have a chance to make extraordinary progress in the areas," Syahril expounded.

In addition, Indonesia is also pursuing the Golden Indonesia vision, under which it is seeking to be one of the five countries with the largest economies in the world by 2045.

"In order to achieve Golden Indonesia in 2045, we need the best human resources. It requires better education to produce qualified human resources that can build development in regions. If we are still struggling in a learning crisis, we cannot achieve that. That is why the Independent Learning Program comes in handy," he added.
