Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation has set up the Christmas 2022 and New Year 2023 Transportation Coordination Post in order to monitor and control the smooth running of transportation during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated that the coordination post is built for conducting transportation monitoring and control and to improve coordination and collaboration between relevant stakeholders to ensure the implementation can run in a safe, comfortable, and healthy manner.

“Thus, I request the implementation of the Christmas and New Year (coordination post) to be managed well. Apart from paying attention to safety, security, and comfort, it must also prioritize the health aspect,” he remarked while opening the coordination post virtually on Monday.

The coordination post is located at the main office of the Transportation Ministry and is open from December 19, 2022, to January 3, 2023.

In addition to the coordination post, service posts and monitoring posts are also spread across transportation nodes in several regions.

He noted that this time, Christmas and New Year holidays would be different as compared to last time when people's mobility was still limited.

In addition, several aspects that have raised concerns, include the number of COVID-19 cases that tended to rise in the last few weeks, the school holidays, and the trend of relatively high public mobility, which, based on the results of a survey conducted by the Ministry of Transportation through its Transportation Policy Agency, projected 44.17 million people to travel during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

According to Sumadi, the survey showed that private vehicles, both cars and motorcycles, are the most chosen transportation modes that will be used by people.

He appealed to the public to not use motorcycles for long-distance travel due to safety reasons.

"In order to make travel more comfortable, apart from private vehicles, means of public transportation, such as buses, trains, ships and ferries, and planes, can be the choice for the people. We have prepared them, and we are trying to provide good service," he noted.

He urged all ranks of the ministry and other relevant stakeholders to use the coordination post well and synergize and collaborate actively and responsively for the smooth running of transportation during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
