At least 35 athletes, comprising 21 men and 14 women, from 19 provinces competed for a spot on the national training (pelatnas) squad.
The national selection was held at the Anti-Doping Laboratory, State University of Surabaya (Unesa), Lidah Wetan Campus, on December 27–29, 2022, the Indonesian triathlon national team’s manager, Dika Chrisna Irzandi, told ANTARA via short message on Thursday.
The selection process for the sport that combines three branches, namely running, swimming, and cycling, differed from earlier, he informed.
"Normally, swimming is done on a beach or lake while cycling and running are carried out on a road," he said.
"Now, swimming was done in a pool, cycling using indoor area equipment, and running was still done on a road (Unesa area)," he explained.
Unesa was chosen as the selection location based on several considerations, including complete and supporting facilities. Moreover, support from sports science is also important in the selection process and for the improvement of athletes' performance.
Athletes that managed to pass the selection will begin their training at the start of 2023.
FTI has at least three major agendas in 2023. Besides Cambodia SEA Games, there are the ANOC World Beach Games II/2023 in Bali and ASIAN Games XIX/2022 in Hangzhou, China, which will be held next year.
At the XXXI/2021 SEA Games in Vietnam held this year, Indonesia managed to bag two silver and three bronze medals.
The two silver medals were bagged by Inge Prasetyo in the women's single triathlon event and Rudi Febriade in the men's single duathlon event.
Meanwhile, the three bronze medals were won by Ronald Setiawan Bintang (men's single triathlon), Jauhari Johan (men's single duathlon), and Zahra Putri Bulan Aprillia (women's single duathlon).
