"We are developing license plate with a QR code and a chip to find out whether the vehicle's license plate is genuine or fake," head of the National Police Traffic Corps Inspector General Firman Shantyabudi remarked here on Tuesday.
He pointed out that public awareness of orderly traffic is still low. In fact, ever since the ETLE policy was imposed, people had been trying to trick the camera, so they could avoid being ticketed, such as by removing the license plates.
Moreover, there are people, who use fake license plates from street vendors.
Thus, they are contemplating on combining electronic fines and manual fines.
"Why do we have to consider it? One of the reasons is (because) the community, instead of awareness arising when an officer tickets (them), (what is in fact done is that) the number plate is removed from the back, replaced, and some even deliberately violate (trafficking rules)," he pointed out.
The traffic corps would not remain idle, and every violation that could increase risk of traffic accidents would be acted upon with a warning, he emphasized.
Shantyabudi spoke of having given directives to his staff that personnel on duty should also gave a warning on top of giving a ticket, so that people would be aware of and adhere to the regulations.
If there was no awareness, then law enforcement using police force would be imposed again, he remarked. Traffic Corps personnel on site will also complement the function of electronic ticketing, one of which is by using QR code technology and chips on license plates.
He said that law enforcement would be more effective if police, people, and law enforcement worked accordingly.
Shantyabudi appealed to the public to not purchase fake license plates. The National Police will improve the quality of license plates without further ado to prevent other vehicles with unauthorized license plates from roaming freely.
He emphasized that law enforcement was the last resort. He encouraged raising public awareness to ensure orderly traffic.
He also reminded the public that vehicles without license plates were usually used by thieves.
To increase public awareness of orderly traffic, the National Police Traffic Corps has also recommenced road patrols.
"We have additional electric vehicles, recommencing traffic patrols to compel people to be orderly. (On) avoiding number plates on purpose, I say this is (the behaviour of) perpetrator because the back plate was almost (always) removed by the robber. We will stop vehicles that do not have license plates behind them,” Shantyabudi added.
Discourse on the QR code and chip installations on the license plate was submitted in early January 2022. However, it is still in the development stage.
