Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) invited 10 male athletes to partake in the Indonesian Davis Cup team selection being held at the Gelora Bung Karno tennis court, here, on January 3-7, 2023.

Head for athlete development of Pelti Suharyadi noted in a statement received on Wednesday that four best players, who partook in the selection, would be included in the Davis Cup team.

The selection participants were divided into two groups. The first group comprised Lucky Candra Kurniawan, David Agung Susanto, Achad Imam Maruf, Renaldi Aqila Arifadli Salim, and Ega Uneputy.

Meanwhile, the second group comprised Tegar Abdi Satrio Wibowo, Anthony Susanto, Claudio Renardi Lumanauw, Rifqi Sukma Ramadhan, and Jeremy Nahor.

"They will play in a round-robin scheme, meeting each other in the group until we get the best four players, who will accompany Christopher Rungkat, Muhammad Rifqi Fitriadi, and Nathan Anthony Barki, who have been selected into the Davis Cup team," Suharyadi stated.

He noted that the players had undergone physical tests in the previous week.

Later, they will participate in two International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour M15 tournaments in Jakarta in mid-January, he stated.

The Davis Cup team selection will be conducted under the supervision of coaches: Bonit Wiryawan and Sulistyo Wibowo.

Meanwhile, tennis players chosen to be the members of the team are currently taking part in other series of tournaments.

"Rifqi (Fitriadi) has been in Monastir, Tunisia, to take part in the ITF M15 tournament since the end of last year (2022). Meanwhile, Christo (Rungkat) is participating in the ATP Challenger Bangkok starting this week,” Suharyadi, who was the 1990 Asian Games mixed doubles gold winner, stated.

He noted that Barki is still undergoing a training program with his personal coach in Singapore.

The Indonesian Davis Cup team will have a crucial Group II play-off match against Vietnam that will serve as the host on February 4-5, 2023. Indonesia must win the match to avoid being relegated into the Group III of the Asia Oceania Zone.
