Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) is cooperating with the National Police (Polri) to keep cyberspace safe ahead of the 2024 General Elections.

"The government provides strong and high support to press freedom and freedom of association. However, we need to keep our digital space clean," Communication and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate said here on Wednesday.

The cooperation was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the synergy of tasks and functions in the field of communication and information in October 2022.

The MoU was inked to update a previous one signed on December 20, 2017, concerning security and law enforcement in the field of communication and information, deputy chief of the Polri's Criminal Investigation Agency, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, informed at a press conference on the MoU.

"The MoU renewal is aimed at improving coordination in the context of synergy and tasks in the field of communication and information with the ministry," Suheri said.

The MoU covers the exchange of data and information, prevention of dissemination and use of electronic information and/or electronic documents that have prohibited contents, security assistance, law enforcement, provision and utilization of facilities and infrastructure, as well as capacity building and utilization of human resources.

In terms of data exchange, it includes the mobile subscriber integrated services digital network (MSISDN) for carrying out profiling, Minister Plate said.

As for law enforcement, Polri and Kominfo will independently and jointly carry out law enforcement in the field of communication and information in accordance with their duties and functions.

Furthermore, Plate explained that Kominfo has Cyber Drone that conducts non-stop patrols to monitor the digital space.

The surveillance system can monitor hoaxes, hate speech, and other prohibited activities in digital space.
