"This is a meaningful gesture for the corruption eradication crusade in Indonesia. The presence of KPK in Papua is a warning to all those who commit corruption and proves the presence of the state to realize social justice in Papua," Bahuri said in a statement on Saturday.
He affirmed that KPK officers have performed their work according to legal principles and prevailing laws as well as by respecting human rights.
Enembe's arrest must be a warning for all state apparatuses and bureaucracy to not violate laws by committing corruption, the KPK head stated.
"Suspect LE (Lukas Enembe) is an example that a rogue public official, who could do anything and failed to discipline himself, will face the consequences before the law," Bahuri stated.
He also expressed gratitude to Papua's residents, who supported the anti-graft agency in taking action against corrupt officials, not only in Enembe's case but also in other cases.
"We understand that broad support from Papua residents is for the KPK's presence to rescue state money and assets ought to be used for Papuan people's progress, to advance their livelihood, and to enlighten the Papuan people and all Indonesians," he remarked.
Earlier, KPK named Enembe and director of PT Tabi Bangun Papua (TBP) Rijatono Lakka as suspects in bribery and gratification cases pertaining to infrastructure development in Papua, where Enembe served as governor.
For investigation purposes, KPK decided to arrest Enembe for at least 20 days from January 11 to January 30.
Considering Enembe's health conditions, the anti-graft agency allowed him to undergo medical treatment at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital, Jakarta, before starting his incarceration.
Lakka was arrested on January 5. He is expected to remain behind bars for at least 20 days until January 24.
