Her husband, Ferdy Sambo, was found guilty of the same crime and sentenced to death earlier the same day.
At the trial session here on Monday, Chief Judge Wahyu Iman Santoso said that Candrawathi was proven to have violated Article 340 subsidiary Article 338 in conjunction with Article 55 Paragraph (1) Number 1 of the Criminal Code.
Judge Alimin Ribut Sujono said they found that Candrawathi wanted Hutabarat's murder at her husband's official residence in Duren Tiga, South Jakarta.
The judge also found that Candrawathi was involved in planning the murder.
The judge said that Candrawathi's failure to be an exemplary figure as a spouse of a police officer—by virtue of her being Sambo’s wife— and an executive member of the Association of Police Officers' Wives (Bhayangkari) was an aggravating factor in deciding the prison sentence.
The judges also cited the defendant's failure to be straightforward at the trial as another aggravating factor.
"The defendant's action is causing huge losses," the judge added.
The judges’ decision to sentence Candrawathi to 20 years in prison was harsher than the eight-year prison term sought by prosecutors at an earlier trial session on January 18.
Candrawathi was one of the five defendants in the premeditated murder of Brigadier J. The other defendants are her husband Ferdy Sambo, Ricky Rizal, Richard Eliezer, and Kuat Ma'ruf.
The five defendants were charged with violating Article 340, subsidiary Article 338 in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) Number 1 of the Criminal Code.
In the trial session on January 16, prosecutors had sought eight years in prison for Ma’ruf and Rizal. Meanwhile, they had sought 12 years for Eliezer at a trial session on January 18.
