We must look at the aspirations, dynamics, and fears of today's younger generation. I think they are looking forward to films that can address those issues.Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian films need to provide a wide space where communities can constantly discuss problems together in the hope of building collective intelligence to revive the film ecosystem, a government official said.
The statement was made by Director General of Culture at the Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry Hilmar Farid while opening the 2023 National Film Day conference here on Monday.
"We need to have common knowledge on what we should do. In addition to intelligent and genius people, we need collective intelligence to awaken the film ecosystem," Farid said.
Farid revealed that he had studied film script writing with a mentor for a year, where he observed that it takes a short time to develop the expertise for creating scenarios.
He also highlighted the dynamic demographics of today's film audiences, with millennials, generation Z, and generation Alpha accounting for the largest group of the population.
"Talking about cinema today, we need to recognize our society that can be the basis of our creations going forward," he explained.
He said he expected that society, especially the younger generation, will be studied more to gain a deeper understanding.
"We must look at the aspirations, dynamics, and fears of today's younger generation. I think they are looking forward to films that can address those issues. There has to be something that accompanies them when thinking and this is the national filmmakers' job," he added.
National filmmakers also need to observe recent changes in the field due to the development of digital technology, which has not only affected the production process, but also social order.
According to him, digital technology is also affecting film distribution, such as through Internet-based over-the-top (OTT) media services, making cinemas not the only place to enjoy movies.
"Why our films are only concentrated in cinemas? There have been many films produced during the pandemic, but have not been shown in theaters until today. This means that dependence on the medium becomes significant," he said.
