Jakarta (ANTARA) - The General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has urged everyone, particularly political parties contesting the 2024 elections, to refrain from carrying out campaign activities or agendas during Ramadan.

"(During the course of Ramadan) there has to be no activity of appealing (people to select any contestant) in the February 14, 2024, election," Bawaslu head Rahmat Bagja said here on Thursday.

A similar appeal was made by Bawaslu member Lolly Suhenty on the sidelines of an event during which the agency held a dialogue with political parties participating in the 2024 elections.

She said that political parties competing in 2024 should not mix up good deeds during the Islamic holy month with veiled political campaigns.

"What's prohibited by the General Election Supervisory Agency is mixing good deeds with hidden campaigns," she added.

However, she stressed that the agency has not prohibited political parties from doing good deeds during the Islamic holy month.

"The agency does not prohibit people from giving charity. The agency does not prohibit people from donating," she clarified.

What the agency has prohibited, however, is in accordance with Law Number 7 of 2017 on General Election.

"For example, promising to give money or other material things, whether it is during the campaign period, counting vote period, or during election silence," Suhenty pointed out.

She said that currently, the general election proceeding is in the period of political party announcement, during which people are provided details regarding political parties' numbers. The campaign period itself will start from November 28, 2023, she informed.

During the socialization period, political parties are not permitted to promote themselves or give out any kind of campaign materials, such as those related to their vision and mission, programs, or image, she elaborated.
