“Parenting plays an essential role that can affect the quality of children’s character. Thus, parenting is a very important aspect,” the ministry’s Acting Deputy for the Coordination of Children, Women, and Youth’s Quality Didik Suhardi stated here on Thursday.
He explained that currently, street brawls among teenagers should be a shared concern, especially for parents.
“Street brawls among teenagers are an iceberg phenomenon. A child’s violent act may be an impact of wrong styles of parenting or interaction in the closest environment,” he cautioned.
One of the efforts to prevent children from becoming perpetrators of violence is by optimizing the styles of parenting and interactions among family members.
“For example, for those (parents) who have children with good self-concept, democratic parenting may be the right choice because children would be happy to discuss and exchange opinions (with their parents), so parents can give the right guidance,” he remarked.
Suhardi also emphasized that peers are an important factor influencing the development of children's character. Hence, parents need to pay attention to children's interactions outside the home.
“Thus, families or parents must be able to position themselves as friends and ones to share stories for children. Thus, when children want to vent, they can tell their parents instead of looking for a place to vent outside the house," he explained.
Meanwhile, family psychologist Ketti Murti stated that from the perspective of psychology, there are three main concepts of parenting.
"The three concepts are authoritarian parenting, democratic parenting, and permissive parenting," Murti remarked.
The psychologist further noted that although the main key in parenting is to adjust to the child's personality, permissive parenting is the least recommended style, as parental guidance is crucial for children's optimal growth.
