Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has urged the House of Representatives to finalize the Asset Forfeiture Bill, saying it would support the handling of corruption cases in the country.

"The Asset Forfeiture Bill is indeed an initiative of the government and we continue to push for it to be completed by the House," he said on the sidelines of his visit to Johar Baru Market in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to the President, deliberations on the bill are still on in the parliament.

He expressed the hope that the Asset Forfeiture Law will make the prosecution of corruption cases easier and serve as a legal umbrella for the authority to confiscate corruptors' assets.

Earlier, during a joint hearing with Commission III of the House on March 29, 2023, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, also called on legislators to pass the bill.

Mahfud said that the bill would enable the handling of alleged irregular transactions worth Rp349 trillion at the Ministry of Finance.

Responding to this, Chairperson of Commission III Bambang Wuryanto said that the government should lobby the general chairpersons of political parties to get the green light for the bill.
