Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), accompanied by First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo, inspected trading activities and staple goods prices at Sambonggede Market, Tuban, East Java, on Thursday.

According to the President, the prices of a number of grocery items at the market are quite affordable and even, cheap compared to in other regions.

"With chicken meat being sold for Rp28 thousand, onions for Rp30 thousand, and chillies for Rp28 thousand–29 thousand, this market offers the cheapest (prices) as compared to those in other regencies and provinces," he said, according to a press broadcast received in Jakarta.

According to Jokowi, two factors determine the price of a commodity in a region: its supply and its production rate. The higher the supply and production rate, the lower the price.

During their visit, the President and the First Lady also distributed a number of packages of social aid as well as groceries to beneficiaries and merchants at Sambonggede Market.

They were accompanied by East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Tuban District Head Aditya Halindra Faridzky.

"Mrs. Governor has also informed me that the chicken meat supply is abundant. That is why the price here is the cheapest as compared to other cities and regencies," President Jokowi said.
