Biak, Papua (ANTARA) - The Communication and Information Ministry is collaborating with the Archipelago Student Journalists Association (IJPN) to teach journalism to 100 college students in Biak Numfor and Supiori districts, Papua.

"This journalism workshop is expected to teach students about knowledge and skills on how to write news, take photos, and videos," coordinator for political and government affairs at the ministry, Dwi Dyaningsih, said here on Monday.

Another reason for holding the journalism workshop was to instill pride in the country.

After learning the skill of writing news, participants are expected to write news and take journalistic photos and videos that showcase the rich natural potential of Biak Numfor.

The ministry praised the 100 students who participated in the journalism workshop organized by IJPN in Biak on April 10. The workshop will come to an end on April 11.

Meanwhile, chair of the Papua IJPN, Roberthus Yewen, said that he was very proud of the journalism workshop, as a 100 students from 8 universities in Biak and Supiori showed their interest in the activity.

Yewen said he expected that after completing the workshop, students can write news and take photos and videos to spotlight the extraordinary potential of Papua’s tourism and culture, which according to him, has been rarely covered by the mass media and social media.

"IJPN invites all students in Papua to write about (Papua’s) potential so that the public does not only see Papua (news) only in the context of conflict," he said.

Students participating in the journalism workshop learned about the theory and practice of writing from journalists and online media owners in Papua, he added.

"One hundred Biak Numfor students are expected to be advanced in writing news with this journalistic activity," he added.

The workshop was opened by the deputy district head of Biak Numfor, Calvin Mansnembra.
