Confiscated assets must not be idle or neglectedBanjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin accentuated that assets owned by convicted corruptors and obtained illegally in their criminal enterprise must be confiscated and returned to the state.
On the sidelines of his working visit here on Tuesday, Amin made the remark to convey his opinion regarding the deliberation on the Asset Forfeiture Bill in the parliament.
"I believe what is important is to confiscate illegal assets obtained by illegal means or in corrupt practices. Those must be confiscated and returned to ensure the state money will be back to the state coffers," Amin stated.
After confiscating the assets, the next important aspect is to ensure the forfeited asset will not remain idle and will be used for the state's benefit, he emphasized.
"Confiscated assets must not be idle or neglected. There are cars, or lands, or other assets that must be managed properly for the benefit of the state," the vice president noted.
He emphasized that the government had taken steps to devise the Asset Forfeiture Bill and striven to convince all parties, including those skeptical about the bill, that the Asset Forfeiture Bill is in the best interests of the people.
"The government will work to (convince) those who are yet to agree by helping them understand that the bill is not in the interest of anyone but for all the people," he remarked.
He expressed optimism that the bill would be deliberated by the parliament and be designated as a priority legislation soon as the government continues to push for the bill's passage.
Earlier, President Joko Widodo also urged the parliament to finalize the Asset Forfeiture Bill, saying that it would support the handling of corruption cases in the country.
"The Asset Forfeiture Bill is indeed an initiative of the government, and we continue to push for it to be completed by the House," he remarked during his visit to Johar Baru Market in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (April 5).
He expressed hope that the Asset Forfeiture Law would make the prosecution of corruption cases easier and serve as a legal umbrella for the authority to confiscate corruptors' assets.
