Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Communication and Information Ministry will support the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in developing artificial intelligence (AI) for natural language processing (NLP) by providing data.

"Under the collaboration, we (the ministry) will analyze a lot of conversations (in cyberspace), which will be collected into a set of data,” director general of informatics application at the ministry Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan said at a press conference here on Thursday.

He made the statement during the inking of a collaboration agreement on the development of NLP AI with the head of BRIN’s Artificial Intelligence Research and Innovation Collaboration (KORIKA), Hammam Riza.

The attempt is expected to help Indonesia independently develop innovations and solutions using data obtained within the country.

The data will be collected by the Communication and Information Ministry from the search results of the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which has been used to monitor the spread of false information in Indonesia's cyberspace.

Later, the data will be made available to KORIKA’s team so that the development of NLP in Indonesia can be carried out more massively and even accelerated. One of the innovations based on NLP is chatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot created by American research laboratory OpenAI.

“We have a lot of them (such data), so the KORIKA team can use them to enrich the data they need (to build the NLP)," the ministry’s director general said.

It is possible that the ministry and KORIKA’s collaboration would help build the Indonesian version of chatGPT, he added.

"Through this collaboration, we hope that (the availability of) the data will become more abundant, thus we can expedite the realization of a large language model. It is a rolling program to create new systems and capabilities in Indonesia," he remarked.

Meanwhile, the KORIKA head stated that his organization will utilize the data provided by the ministry for several purposes, including big data analytics.

“It (the data from the ministry) can be used as the basic capital for big data analytics," he added.

BRIN’s KORIKA is a quad helix (government, industry, academics, and community) collaboration-based organization that was established as a follow-up to Indonesia's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (Stranas KA), which was launched on the commemoration of National Technology Awakening Day on August 10, 2020.
