Jakarta (ANTARA) - The General Elections Commission (KPU) is planning to revise KPU Regulation No. 33 of 2018 on general elections campaigns, according to KPU Commissioner August Mellaz.

"Regarding the KPU regulation on the election campaign for the 2024 elections, it is likely we will not replace it with a new one, but we plan to revise the regulation,” he informed during a discussion on the regulation of election campaigns on social media sites and digital literacy at the KPU RI Media Center here on Thursday.

He said that the revision to the regulation would cover campaign advertisements and election campaigns on social media.

"(The revision) will include campaign advertisement on social media, which, in this context, is (a campaign) paid by candidates. The campaign of election candidates will also be included (in the revision)," the commissioner said.

The election commission will also regulate the definition of social media in the campaign regulation revision, he disclosed.

"(The revision) will also define social media. It is an online platform where two-way interaction, participation, and new media content can appear," Mellaz said.

He added that the revision would also regulate the limits on the use of social media by political candidates for campaigning.

Earlier, during the same discussion, executive director of public policy research agency The Indonesian Institute (TII), Adinda Tenriangke Muchtar, said that her agency advised the KPU and the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) to issue a detailed regulation on political campaigns on social media.

"KPU and Bawaslu need to issue a technical regulation for general elections and regional elections to specifically regulate political campaigns on social media and synchronize it with existing regulations," Muchtar said.

The institute also handed over its research report on Improving Social Media Political Campaign Regulations for the 2024 General Elections during an earlier audience with KPU on Tuesday (April 11, 2023), which, at that time, was represented by Mellaz.
