The earthquake was felt by most people from East Java to West Java," acting head of BNPB's Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, informed in Jakarta on Friday.
He said the earthquake occurred on the north coast of Tuban, East Java, at a magnitude of 6.6 and a depth of 632 km.
The vibrations from the quake were also felt in different provinces. Though the quake was not a shallow quake, it is hoped that it did not cause significant damage, Muhari said.
"BNPB has continued to coordinate with the provincial/district/city disaster mitigation agency (BPBD) to monitor and conduct a rapid situation or impact assessment to determine emergency response measures if needed," he added.
Earlier, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake, based on an updated parameter, was recorded to have a magnitude of 6.9.

Its epicenter was located at 6.31 degrees south latitude and 111.96 degrees east longitude, in the sea at a distance of 65 kilometers to the northwest of Tuban city, East Java, and at a depth of 643 kilometers.
Based on the hypocenter, the earthquake was a type of deep earthquake caused by slab pull deformation activity on the Indo-Australian plate, which was subducted under the Java Sea, he disclosed.
The results of the analysis of the source mechanism showed that the earthquake had a normal fault mechanism.
Head of BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said that the modeling results showed that the earthquake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
As of 5:43 p.m. local time, the BMKG’s monitoring results showed one aftershock activity with a magnitude of 5.5, he informed.
He reminded the public to avoid entering buildings that had been cracked or damaged in the earthquake.
